Pandit Birju Maharaj
The Maharaj family is renowned in the world of Kathak classical dance. The first Kathak teacher, Ishwari Prasad, is the great- great- great- great- grandfather of Pandit Birju Maharaj, an amazing Kathak dancer who has carried on the family tradition of pursuing Kathak as a profession. The family’s heritage has revolved around Kathak dancing for seven generations, and today, Pt. Birju Maharaj’s children are continuing the tradition. Born ‘Dukh Haran’, Pt. Birju Maharajsoon changed his name to ‘Brijmohan’, which was fondly shortened to ‘Birju’, the name he still goes by. Birju showed a passion for Kathak starting at the young age of three years. He learned several difficult pieces at a very young age, and would watch his father, a Kathak teacher, as he taught his students. When his father performed at various events, sometimes he would let Birju perform a short piece. When Birju’s father passed away, he learned from his uncle. He was invited to teach at Sangeet Bharti, and since then, he has made several performances in India. He is a very- skilled and dedicated Kathak dancer, and is amazing at what he does.
