Manpreet Tur, Jaya Sharma Win ‘Miss and Mrs. 2010’ Contest

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Over 400 people flocked to the Sunnyvale Hindu Temple here Sept. 26 to witness the Miss and Mrs. 2010 contest hosted by the Indo American Society of the Bay Area.

Following a talent presentation by the contestants as well as an entertainment program, at seven in the evening Jaya Sharma was declared the winner of Mrs. 2010 while Taranjeet Kaur won the first runner-up crown. The second runners-up were Alka Baby and Moni Mann.

In the Miss 2010 competition, Manpreet Tur won the Miss 2010 crown. Sayali Vasnik was the first runner-up while Sukhjit Kalo and Sandeep Sanga jointly shared third place.

“The idea that evolved from the immense popularity of the ‘Miss Punjaban’ contest seemed like a great opportunity to extend to the entire Indian community of the Bay Area,” Asha Sharma, one of the event’s organizers and hosts, told India-West.

Sharma, well-known for her anchoring skills, has hosted some of the Bay Area’s major Punjabi shows, including those of Gurdaas Mann and Hans Raj Hans.

“The purpose behind the event was to showcase the talents of women who dedicate their lives to serving the household without being able to take time out to pursue their personal ambitions,” Sharma added.

“The other goal of the event was to engage the younger generation to learn more about their culture and heritage.”

The program began with Bhangra dance performances by children from the Ajay Bhangra Academy, who were later awarded certificates for their performances.

The Mrs. 2010 competition opened with dance numbers by the 19 contestants. While participants like Moni Mann, Amardeep Kaur and Kirandeep Kaur resorted to more traditional Bhangra presentations, Sonali Shrivastav showed her versatility with a traditional Kathak number set to the tune of “More piya” from the popular Bollywood movie “Devdaas.”

In the talent round, each contestant presented their skills to the judges, whom some tried to impress with their musical and lyrical abilities while others entertained them in the conventional Punjabi style set to the rhythms of the “Nagada,” or festive drum.

The same format applied to the Miss 2010 competition.

“It’s great to see the younger generation so involved and enthused to learn Punjabi culture and dance,” Archana Pandey, one of the judges at the event along with Sunita Verma, Seema and Khulwinder, told India-West.

Between segments, guest artists like Sonali Verma entertained the audience with special performances while the organizers made preparations for the next presentation. The grand finale was a Gidda choreographed by Sonu Dhillon.
